The difference between the new Photoshop logo and the CS3 icons is that the CS3 icons had a strong rational behind them; make lots of different products look like one family.

This new Photoshop symbol seems to have no reason for being, it's just pointless decoration.

Since PDF-world also has some sort of a logo, I would expect something that goes along well with that one... Yet these two are visually incompatible...

@JD - I'm assuming Photoshop is taking on new roles, that's why the new icon was introduced. I know when I present logo comps everyone sees something different and it isn't until I explain the rationale behind why I did something that I start winning people over. That's an important component, so it'd be great to hear the creator's thoughts.

That graphic was a surprise to me too. I'm trying to find the owner on it.

I *think* it serves a different purpose than the periodic-table icons... symbolizes the different ways of working with the larger Adobe Photoshop technology base, whether desktop (regular, Extended, or Elements) or online (Express).

Once I find the owner of the logo I'll try to persuade them to engage in weblogs, explain a little of what they're thinking.... ;-)

@Ryan - I was just getting used to the element chart.

@Nick - Maybe your right. Maybe it's the way products that have online counter parts like Photoshop Express or Premiere Express. There's also a Photoshop "family" site : http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/family/ . I'm sure the online version will be part of the family.

It reminds me of the official PBS logo... It seems odd that Adobe would re-brand their 2nd most popular product in such a short time.. Maybe this new logo will encompas just the non-CS3 products?

This confused the hell out of me when I saw it. It showed up on the front page of our intranet and I was like 'what?!'

No idea what the deal is, but I liked the element chart.
